Q1) How long does it take to get to the Snow Carnival venue from Tokamachi Station

Way to the carnivalIt takes about 30 minutes on foot。
If you are not used to roads with snow,、please allow yourself plenty of time to get here.。
Driving is prohibited to guests near the stage area、so visitors will be unable to access the stage by car

Q2) When does construction of the giant Snow Carnival snow stage begin?
Can we view it during this period?

<Carnival Venue>
It largely depends on the amount of snowfall prior to the festival,、but the stage is typically created about two weeks prior to the carnival. 。
※ Because of heavy machinery and large amounts of snow, entrance is prohibitedprior to the carnival。
Please note that you will be unable to view the stage beforehand.。

<Snow Sculptures>
Many snow sculpting groups will begin their work about one week prior to the festival. 。
Some areas require entrance in order to view the sculptures.。
Much of the work is done from early evening to 9pm.。

Q3) How many people visit the festival each year?

Snow Carnival
Approximately 260,000 guests come to visit、with the carnival venue receiving approximately 30,000 guests. 。(Average of prior years)

Q4) What should I wear?

Most of the events take place outside、so please dress warmly.。
We recommend in particular coming in warm footwear (thick socks, insulated boots, etc).。
We recommend outdoor gear meant for skiing and snowboarding as this will keep you the most warm. 。
※ If you visit the Snow Carnival、please be advised that you cannot use open umbrellas in the main area. 。
For this reason。we recommend a waterproof hooded poncho.。

Q5) What kind of footwear should I bring?

Much of the carnival plaza and festival hiroba are right on top of the snow.。
We recommend taller boots、and if possible boots with waterproofing are even better.。
Any soles that are prone to slippage are not recommended as it can be dangerous to walk on the snowy grounds.。

Q6) Are there hotels or ryokan near the Snow Carnival venue?

There are accommodations close to the carnival venue,、but please bear in mind the night of the carnival itself is the peak time for booking。Please make your reservations as soon as possible to secure a room.。

Q7) Where is the Tokamachi Snow Festival held?

There are three main types of spots to check out during the Tokamachi Snow Festival: Snow Carnival, Snow Artworks, and Festival Hiroba.、Each type of venue has it own characteristics.。
The Snow Carnival will take place in Shirokeoka Pure Land.。This is about a 30 minute walk from the station. 。
Snow Artworks and Festival Hiroba will be constructed all throughout the city.。

Q8) Is there car parking available?

Parking Lot
During the Snow Festival period、temporary parking is provided.。
For a list of these locations、please view the Traffic Guide Map (PDF (Japanese Only)) (English translators on hand if needed)
Please make sure to park in accordance with signage and traffic personnel.。
Please allow yourself plenty of time to park as it will be busy. 。

Q9) Where can I find the Snow Festival maps and pamphlets?

The guide can be obtained at the Tokamachi Tourist Association at the west entrance of the Tokamachi Station. 。
During the Snow Festival itself the pamphlet will also be distributed at the many information centers across town. 。
Additionally、all citizens of Tokamachi will receive a pamphlet in the February issue of the Tokamachi Citywide Newsmagazine. 。

Q10) Can I return or cancel a Snow Festival Passport for a refund?


In regards to cancelling and receiving a refund for your Passport、even if parts of the event must be cancelled/suspended from the Committee side, 、or due to any other unavoidable/unforeseen circumstances, we are unfortunately unable to offer refunds. 。We ask for your understanding.。

Q11) Is one passport enough for the whole family?
    Or does each person need to purchase their own passport?

Snow Festival Passport
The Passport is meant for one person usage only. 。
However、in regards to the Snow Carnival, one of the biggest perks is access to the VIP viewing area.、If you have a Passport, any children of yours in elementary school or younger can be admitted to the VIP area without their own passport so long as they are with you.。
The Passport has a lot of perks included beyond the VIP area,、so please buy a Passport today!。

Q12. What is the distance from the viewing zone to the carnival stage?。


The carnival venue is split into three parts: Special Invitation Zone, Passport Holder VIP Zone, and General Admittance Zone.。
The distance from each zone's front part until the stage is below:。
・「Special Invitation Zone」 … about 7m
・「Passport Holder VIP Zone」 … about 20 m
・「General Admittance Zone」 … about 40 m

(It should be noted、the size of the snow stage is dependent on snowfall totals and is subject to change.、Please keep this in mind for your trip here.

Q13) Which year was the Snow Carnival snow stage certified by the Guinness Book of World Records?

The 32nd snow stage "Prayer Hall," from 1981, has been certified to the Guinness Book of World Records。
Constructed to resemble France's Sacré-Cœur, it stood at a height of 25 meters, width of 50 meters, and a deph of 15 meters,、making it the largest sculpture in the world made entirely of snow. 。
