The Tokamachi Snow Festival was created from the idea of befriending and enjoying the snow, and now we are celebrating the 71st year of the festival. There are so many things to do at Japan’s original snow festival in Tokamachi! Take a look and see what’s new this year!

The grand attraction of the 71st Tokamachi Snow Festival, the Main Area, can be found in the Echigo-Tsumari Museum of Contemporary Art Kinare and Michi no Eki Crossten areas!
Even without much snow, the goal of the Tokamachi Snow Festival is to have fun! If you don’t know where to start, come visit the Main Area!

Snow Sculpture Art

Completely handmade snow sculptures are the focal point of the Tokamachi Snow Festival.
In a kimono town with such a rich culture and deep connection to beauty and art, these beautifully-crafted snow sculptures will stay in your memories for years to come.
Each region and neighborhood features something different and unique to their area.

*Regarding the Lack of Snowfall (last updated January 27th, 2020) 
– The Snow Sculptures are currently happening as scheduled.
– However, the amount of sculptures and their contents are subject to change without notice depending on snowfall.
– There will be no sculpture judging this year.

Festival Hiroba Plazas (Omatsuri Hiroba)

These plazas are scattered throughout the town and regions of Tokamachi City and are manned by the neighborhood residents.
Let’s eat! Let’s play! It’s gonna be a blast!!
These areas offer hospitality and fun in the snow distinct to Snow Country Tokamachi.

Tokamachi Kimono Queen Contest 2020 Ceremony

On the final day of the Tokamachi Snow Festival, three women will be selected from a group of 12 in the Tokamachi Kimono Queen Contest 2020 to become the Tokamachi Kimono Queens.
Just who will get to wear the garland this year!? If you pay for reserved seating at the event, you too can cast a vote!
This year’s ceremony features a performance by Mongolian morin khuur artist Delgermaa.

Date: February 16th, 2020 (Sunday) 1pm (doors open at 12:30pm)
General Admission: Free (balcony seating; see below for paid reserved seating)

Maki Mori: Museum of Sound ~Painting the Future in the White Snow~

Maki Mori is an international soprano artist who will completely enchant you with “Museum of Sound,” a live show that incorporates imagery with her music.
This performance in particular will be a special collaboration with paintings and the scenery of Tokamachi!
When all of the voices overlap, you’ll really be able to feel Tokamachi in your heart and understand just how beautiful the area is.
